Errors in script take news feed offline
« on: June 29, 2012, 03:09:49 AM »
I have had Newscript running on a number of my sites for many years, and they have had no real problems in all this time. However, one of my sites which was hosted with Supanames was transferred to 123-reg who took over Supanames. Now the script goes offline nearly every day and shows the error message :
Quote
[an error occurred while processing this directive]
.

123-reg support has shown me the latest error logs, and the following is part of their message :

I have already passed this to our engineers to take a further look and they produced me the error log, they also state that its possible their is some form of content added to the news feed script that when pulled is causing the server errors, im unable to offer an exact diagnosis however im afraid. The script support site is no longer available it appears, this was written sometime between 1999-2006 as I wondered if their was some updated coding support.

Here is an extract from the log itself :

Quote
2012-06-21T08:13:15+01:00 linweb5 httpd[21257]: [error] [client 182.68.110.59] unknown directive "exec" in parsed doc /websites/123reg/LinuxPackage24/br/oa/ds/broadstoneresidents.org.uk/public_html/index.shtml
2012-06-21T09:32:31+01:00 linweb18 httpd[24650]: [error] [client 173.236.21.106] unknown directive "exec" in parsed doc /websites/123reg/LinuxPackage24/br/oa/ds/broadstoneresidents.org.uk/public_html/index.shtml
2012-06-21T11:58:03+01:00 linweb19 httpd[2266]: [error] [client 124.115.0.20] unknown directive "exec" in parsed doc /websites/123reg/LinuxPackage24/br/oa/ds/broadstoneresidents.org.uk/public_html/index.shtml
2012-06-21T14:00:25+01:00 linweb20 httpd[930]: [error] [client 95.108.248.30] unknown directive "exec" in parsed doc

As far as I can see there has been no changes in the script since 2005 or 2006. Is there any chance of this error being sorted out some time? I don't really want to search for another News script as this one is so good.  :)

Hi there. The NewsScript site actually used to be hosted on 123-reg along with all the other sites of all the scripts. When the last proprietor of the scripts passed away last year and I took over I had a heck of a time getting things to run properly on 123-reg. Their support was basically worthless and the site was running fine then one day it wasn't. I moved everything over to my services, which is basically godaddy.com services but I just resell them.

I am assuming you are getting that error while trying to execute an SSI. That was the problem with 123-reg. I just uploaded the original demos from the old site (hosted on 123-reg) with no changes at all, and everything runs smoothly. http://www.ezscripting.com/news/demo.shtml I am confident that the issue is something to do with 123-reg and virtual includes. I know it doesn't sound like great help, but the issue is 123-reg. I got as far away from them as I could!

Yes - I came to the conclusion that 123-reg is the problem. I have raised many support issues since they took over Supanames around August last year. Nothing has ever been resolved.

I have Newsscript working with other hosting companies, and none of them have any problem. On 123-reg some times it works, then sometimes not. I didn't really want to move to another hosting company, but it looks like I will have to. Either that or change to a News Blog or some other means of showing the latest news.

Thanks for the information, anyway!

Sorry it did not work out better. I may try to work on a javascript solution for placing the news feed on websites, but not sure when I can get o it!

Totally understandable, Jason. However, as most Perl scripts are now very out of date (for example, on cgi.resourceindex.com), people start to lose confidence in these and start to look for alternatives. It's a pity, as there are some fantastic scripts available. If some demonstration of occasional updates can be seen, then hopefully this confidence will return. I know it's more a "labour of love" than for any financial gain, but I would hate to have to migrate to something else.   ;)
